Harold the Hippo Finds a Home in Killarney Lake
As part of the temporary public art program and its city-wide expansion, the City of Fredericton is pleased to announce the installation of Jean Hudson’s “Harold” the Hippo, a life-sized sculpture that can be found floating in Killarney Lake Park’s duck pond this summer.
The concept behind “Harold” is for people to question what they are seeing. With the creation of artificial intelligence and photoshop, Hudson believes we need to consider the legitimacy of what we are seeing and consuming in everyday life. Hippopotamus are not native to New Brunswick, therefore, having a hippo floating in a pond in Fredericton is a fun and experimental way to question our surroundings; the real versus imaginary.
“Harold” is made from the metal of repurposed barrels and welded to a strong frame making it very durable and weather resistant. The installation process was efficient and executed without harm to any of the pond’s wildlife and vegetation. The way in which the sculpture is anchored will allow “Harold” to sway slightly, depending on the wind and movement of the water, adding to its unique and captivating illusion.
The temporary public art program is meant to showcase local artists while contributing to Fredericton’s welcoming and vibrant spaces for the community and visitors in the summer and fall seasons. To learn more about Fredericton’s Temporary Public Art Program, visit Public Art | City of Fredericton
