Fredericton City Council has proclaimed March 21 as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Fredericton Council voted in favour of the official proclamation at Monday night’s Council Meeting, which is a testament to the City's commitment to combating racial discrimination and fostering an inclusive community for all. The proclamation falls in line with recommendations outlined in the final report of the Anti-Racism Task Force released in 2023.

“Fredericton City Council invites residents, organizations, and community leaders to join in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,” said Fredericton Deputy Mayor Greg Ericson. “This day serves as a call to action against racism and discrimination, promoting awareness, education, and solidarity in the ongoing fight for equality and inclusion.”

The City’s first Anti-Racism Day will kick off with an Inclusion in Action symposium at the Maqiyahtimok Centre, in partnership with Greater Fredericton Social Innovation, on March 21 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The event will include Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) professionals, as well as members of organizations actively working to address the needs of marginalized communities.

The symposium will be a platform for organizations big and small to share successes, challenges, and lessons learned from the implementation of DEI initiatives. The event will also focus on projects that fall under UNESCO’s Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities.
